MacGregor Elementary School - Mission Statement

MacGregor School will provide a safe and caring environment where all students can succeed academically, emotionally, socially, and physically.

To help achieve the above Mission Statement, students are expected to adhere to the following school rules.

  1. All students are expected to be the best student they can be
  2. Students will respect their space and others space
  3. Students will listen to people in authority

MacGregor School has a School Improvement Team that consists of staff members and parents.  This team is designed to evaluate where MacGregor is, where we want to be, and how to get there.  We encourage input from all parents.

The policies and procedures identified below are written for the purpose of helping parents to understand our school. It should be noted that these policies are not all-inclusive but provide a framework from which decisions are made.

GENERAL NOTES AND POLICIES

Student Appearance
Children are expected to come to school neat and dressed in an appropriate manner. Pants, jeans, shirts, and blouses are considered appropriate dress. Short shorts, tank tops and sandals are discouraged. Clothing promoting alcohol, cigarettes, crude language, and violence are not acceptable.

Open School Policy
Parents residing within the Bay City School District have the option of having their children attend our school. The parent desiring to have their youngster attend a school outside their attendance area should discuss this transfer with the building principal of the school presently attended by their children. Application forms are available in the school office. The decision to transfer students during the school year is discouraged.

Emergency Information
Children sometimes become ill or have accidents during school hours. The office must have on file an emergency card, which gives parental direction on procedures to follow. It is imperative that two (2) current telephone numbers are kept on file. One number is the parent number, while the other number is the party to be called in the event the parent is not available. In case of phone number changes, please notify the school office immediately.

Medication
The school will not administer medication unless a medication form is completed, signed, and on file in the school office. These forms are available in the Nurse's office. Please do not send your youngster to school with his/her medication. All medication must be in prescribed bottles. No medication in baggies, etc., will be allowed. Any questions should be directed to Nurse Kathy or Nurse Deb.

Report Cards
Report Card go home every 12 weeks.  Mid-marking reports go home every 6 weeks.

Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled twice a year. In addition, parents may request a conference with a teacher before or after school by calling the school office for an appointment.  Conferences with individual teachers may be schedule by contacting the teacher and setting up a time that is convenient for both the parent and teacher.

Cancellation of School
At times throughout the school year it may become necessary to cancel or delay school because of inclement weather. If you suspect such a cancellation, please check this web site (click here) or listen to local radio and television stations, rather than calling the office.

Community Education Offerings
MacGregor will again this year be offering classes for adults and students in cooperation with the Community Education program. Information will be sent home periodically regarding class offerings.

Parental Concerns
Upon occasion, a parent may wish to register a complaint relative to a teacher's action. It is recommended the teacher and parents confer regarding the problem. If the problem cannot be resolved, the building principal may be requested to become involved.

Arrival, Tardy Bell, and Dismissal
Children are to arrive at school no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and to be in their classrooms no later than 8:20 a.m. (Kindergarten (AM) classes will begin at 8:20 and be dismissed at 11:29 a.m.  School will be dismissed at 3:14 p.m.

Visitors
Parents entering the school during the school day are requested to report to the office.  Parents and all visitors are to use the main entrance on Fremont Avenue.

Absenteeism
When a student is absent, the parent should inform the school of the absence. Please call 892-1558. Excessive absences and tardies will be reported to the District Attendance Officer.

Children recuperating from an illness may remain indoors during lunch providing a note is sent stating the number of days the child is to remain indoors. Frequently, children develop illnesses, which are of a communicable nature, i.e., measles, chickenpox, fifth disease, etc . Children are to remain home and may return to school with a doctor's statement. Any child leaving the building during school hours for illness, doctor/dental appointments, family emergencies...MUST be signed out in the school office.

Supplies
Teachers will notify parents relative to the supplies the children will need. It is encouraged that each child have a book bag or tote with their name on it to carry to and from school.

Special Services
Special programs are offered to the children in need and who qualify for specialized services. Among these programs are: Title One (reading), speech therapy, social work, bi-lingual, Indian education, special education, Reading Recovery, Nursing service and counseling service.

Insurance
Accident insurance is available for each student at a reasonable cost. Forms will be sent home to parents during the first week of school.

Lunch Program
Each child will have a 40 minute lunch.  Kindergarten times are 11:10-11:50, 1st grade from 11:20-12:00, 2nd grade from 11:30-12:10, 3rd grade from 11:40-12:20, 4th grade from 11:50-12:30, 5th grade from 12:00-12:40.

Volunteers
MacGregor School has an active parent volunteer group. Parents are encouraged to volunteer their services for the purpose of helping as tutors, helping the classroom teachers, working in the library and many other types of activities. For more information, go to the Volunteer page.

Early Dismissal of Children

When it becomes necessary to excuse a child early, the parent is asked to:
A. inform the teacher, in writing, in advance.
B. stop at the office and sign the child out.

Testing    

Various academic assessments are given to students.  The Michigan Educational Assessment Program Test (MEAP) will be administered to 4th and 5th graders.  Terra Nova testing is administered to 3rd and 5th graders.  Kindergarten through 3rd grade also are tested in the Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP).

Parking
Parents picking up or dropping off students in the parking lot are asked to make note of the enter and exit signs. Parents dropping off or picking up students on Jefferson Street are asked to obey the city parking regulations and use only the West (school) side of the street. Please refrain from parking on Fremont Avenue due to bus pick up and delivery.

Bus Regulations
It is the policy of the Bay City School District to provide safe, courteous and regular transportation services to eligible students. Each year children receive a pamphlet entitled "Rules With Responsibilities on Buses," which lists specifically the rules children must follow when riding the bus. Students are expected to follow these rules or risk suspension of the privilege of riding the school bus.

Vandalism and Property Damage
Our school building and materials are owned by the residents of the Bay City District. The public has every right to demand that the physical plant and materials not be vandalized or damaged. Children who vandalize or damage school property will be required to pay for the losses or damages occurred. Intentional messes made by students will result in the student's involved being required to clean it up!

Rights With Responsibilities
Each year the pamphlet "Rights With Responsibilities" is distributed which enables parents and children to understand the disciplinary policies of the Bay City Public Schools. Please read and go over this pamphlet with your child.

Boy's and Girl's Club
MacGregor school is an officially recognized extension of the Boy's and Girl's Club of Bay County and is actively involved in co-operative activities with that agency. Some of these include an after school tutoring program at the Club, soccer program during lunch hour, various writing contests, and other enrichment activities.

Noon Room
Students will have an opportunity to get help or complete assignments during lunch hour. This room is staffed by one of our teachers.

Items That Don't Belong at School
Weapons of any kind (including pocket knives) are not allowed on school grounds. State law requires severe penalties (expulsion) for students who bring weapons to school. Also, bicycles are not allowed.
