Science-Math Focus ClassroomsFUNDS FROM THE DOW CORNING CORPORATION HELP SUPPORT THIS PROJECT.MacGregor offers 2 fourth grade classrooms (Ms. Bontekoe, Ms. Schoenfled) and 1 fifth grade classroom (Mrs. Spielhaupter) that provide extensive enrichment in math and science infused as part of the core curriculum. These classrooms have increased time allotted to science and math instruction, and work to develop ways to integrate math/science instruction. Teachers use additional planning time to meet jointly and work on developing extension activities for students that apply math in the area of science, and extend science kits currently in use. National Geographic Expeditions materials have been purchased to provide students with science and math reading. Dow Corning scientists have participated in our classrooms as mentors to help build students interest and understanding of the relevance of science, and as a resource in planning and developing activities for students. Taking students into the community and providing them with hands-on experiences in science and math is also a vital part of our focus classrooms. Trips to Dow Corning Corporation, Bay City State Park Outdoor Education Center, Chippewa Nature Center, and Impression 5 Museum are part of this program. Each trip is tied directly to an aspect of our current curriculum in math and/or science. Students in this program develop a Math-Science project which demonstrates their learning, and utilizes the scientific process. |
